Large contingent of Lifford Athletes for Belfast Odyssey A total of 16 Lifford AC juvenile athletes have
been entered for the upcoming Ulster Juvenile Indoor Championships (u14-u17) in the Odyssey in Belfast on 11/12 February. This is the clubs biggest number
of entrants at this age group championships in recent years and is further evidence of the rapid growth of the club in recent
times. The 16 athletes will partake in over 30 events and hopes are high of top 3 places for a number of athletes and automatic
qualification for the All Ireland Championships on 24/25/31
March/1 April.
Our juveniles have put in a hard winters training and the fruits of this hard work should be evident on 11/12 February.
The Ulster Indoor Championships
for u12/u13/u18/u19 will take place in Magherafelt on 3
March. Entry details will be available to athletes and parents shortly. The club presently has a large number
of children training in these age groups and we expect to have at least 20 athletes competing in Magherafelt.
With
the upcoming indoor championships in all age groups, it is vitally important that athletes attend as many training sessions
as possible over the coming weeks!

Raphoe 5K is a Great Success
Race two of Lifford
AC’s 5K series saw yet another large contingent of athletes take to the roads around Raphoe, today, Sunday for what
is turning out to be a hugely successful three race series. An early morning
start and a few early showers did nothing to deter the 169 runners who travelled from across the county and beyond.
Under the starters
orders of local Councillor and former Lifford AC athlete, Frank McBrearty, athletes made their way around a new race route
in the town, ending up in the Diamond area. Foyle Valley’s Keith Shiels was first
man home, completing the 5k route in 16.51. Letterkenny’s Humphrey Murphy
was second man home, finishing in 17.37, just coming home ahead of Foyle Valley’s Patrick Mahon 17.37, with Lifford
pair Daniel Hannigan (17.42) and James Crossan (17.45) yet again posting strong runs for the local club.
Following on from
her victory in last weeks St. Johnston/Carrigans race, City of Derry
girl Catherine Lilburn was the victor here again in Raphoe, coming home in 19.07. Second
woman home was Tír Chónaill’s Vera Haughey in 23.01, followed by team mate Jackie Harvey in 23.40. Lifford’s Isabella Breslin was fourth woman home finshing in 23.59, just ahead of Foyle Valley’s Gemma McGinty in 24.02.
In the category
placings, Letterkenny’s Humphrey Murphy led the V1’s, followed by Tír Chónaill’s Martin O’Halloran
(17.52) and Letterkenny’s Martin Gormley (17.53). In the V2 category, Letterkenny’s
Joe English led the way in 18.13 followed by Enniskillen’s Jimmy Renfrew (19.03) and City of Derry’s Peter Lilburn
third in 19.07. In the V3 category, City of Derry’s
Christy McMonagle was again victorious coming home in 20.33, followed by Lifford’s Danny Burns in 24.50.
In the Women’s
senior race, Catherine Lilburn was victorious, followed by Gemma McGinty, and Finn
Valley’s Samantha Wilkinson (24.50) in third. In the Women’s V1 category, Isabella Breslin led the way, followed by Letterkenny’s Laura Corbett
(24.06) and Jane Watt in 25.24. In the V2 category, Dympna Barrett (24.59) and
Ruth McCrudden (26.47) were first and second, with Lifford’s Anne Lynch finishing in third in 34.04. In the V3 category, the Tír Chónaill pair of Vera Haughey and Jackie Harvey led the way, with Lifford’s
Betty Burns third in 35.03.
In the Junior Women’s
race, it was a City of Derry one two, led home by Amy McDaid in 20.44, followed by Hannah McGowan (22.00) and Lifford AC’s
Shannon Craig in 25.12. The Junior men’s race was won by Letterkenny lad
Conor Morrison in 19.22, followed by City of Derry’s Zack McGowan (19.59) and ever improving Lifford AC athlete Ciaran
Meehan third in 20.31.
Thanks to everyone
who turned up to support the race today. With a race start of 10.00am, and all
proceedings including refreshments and results printed and announced by 11.30am, it was a well organised race morning, and
very much a large team effort by all involved. Thanks to Councillor McBrearty
for starting the race, the race marshalls and organisers, the local Gardaí, everyone who helped out with refreshments, and
to Deele College
for the use of their fine sportshall for pre and post race activities.
The final race
of the series will be held in Lifford next Sunday, 29th January, again with a 10am start. With yet more points collected today and a change of race positions for several athletes, the race next
week should be an exciting affair when the final points are tallied. Athletes
can register on line at www.liffordac.com and receive their race number in advance, speeding entry up on the morning of the
race. For further details on next weeks race, contact Brendan on 086-6007847.

Lifford AC's Thomas Mullen Qualifies for Donegal Cross Country
Team
Congratulations to Lifford AC lad Tom Mullen who tonight qualified for the Donegal u12 Cross Country Relay team which
will compete in the All Ireland Cross Country Relay Championships in Boyle, Co. Roscommon on Sunday 5th
February. The trials which were well attended by clubs from all over the county took place in splendid weather conditions
in Stranorlar on a perfect night for running. After a blistering start to the race which saw other Lifford AC athlete Oran
Brown lead the field at the half way point, Tom gradually made his way through the pack to finish 2nd place overall and a
guaranteed spot on the Donegal team. The early pace saw Oran Brown suffer towards the end as other Lifford AC athletes, Kyle
McCarron and Corey McGettigan came through strongly. Ben White can also be pleased with his performance. Two of the Lifford
AC group are elligible to compete in this age group again next year (Oran Brown and Corey McGettigan) and can look forward
with confidence to possibly gaining a place on next year's team.
Alan McGinley of Lifford AC in his first year in the sport of athletics had a most impressive run in the u14 trial in
what was a very strong field consisting of all the county's top cross country runners in this age group. Alan who was giving
away a year in age and who is elligible for this age group again next year can be well pleased with his 9th place finish and
can look forward to a bright future in the sport.
The club wishes Tom Mullen all the very best in the All Irelands in Co. Roscommon next month.

Lifford AC athletes at Jordanstown Indoor Meet
Six Lifford AC athletes made the journey
to Jordanstown, outside Belfast to compete in the first indoor meeting of the new season on Saturday
last. Good early season performances were posted by all athletes in a competition which provided ideal preparation for some
of those travelling to Nenagh for the National Combined Events Championships next week. New personal best performances in
the high jump for the Craig sisters from Raphoe, Shannon and Kathleen with 1.35m and 1.30m respectively and a 1.35m jump for
Carrigans girl, Nicole Cuskelly who failed narrowly at 1.40m augur well for the season ahead. These girls also came close
to jumping over 4.00m in the Long Jump for the first time and are well capable of going over the 4.00m mark in Nenagh.
Megan
Colhoun performed well in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump, showing excellent potential in the latter in this her first
competition in the event.
Bertram Barrett showed well in the Shot Putt and 60m Sprint and is capable of going over
9.00m in the Putt and under 8.00 secs in the Sprint in Nenagh. Bertram also got out to 9.69m in the Triple Jump and will be
well pleased with his day's work.
Mark Doherty putt the Shot to 9.79m, setting a good early season marker. Good performances
in both the Long Jump and 60m Sprint capped off a good day for the St. Johnston man.
Best of luck to all Lifford AC
athletes competing in the National Combined Events Championships next week.

St.Johnston/Carrigans 5K Race a huge success
A beautiful morning for road running
saw 162 athletes take to the starting line for the first St.Johnston/Carrigans 5K and the first 5K of the 3 race series hosted
by the Lifford club. There has been a bit of a buzz around the series since it was announced just a few short weeks
ago and with such a large turnout today, it clearly is a series that will only go from strength to strength. Today's
race was won by Dean Toland from the Finn Valley club in 16.35, followed by City of Derry's Michael Finnegan, 17.16 and Lifford
pair Daniel Hannigan, 17.35 and James Crossan, 17.37. The womens race was won by Catherine Lilburn from City of
Derry in 19.20 followed by Foyle Valley's Gemma McGinty in 24.17, Finn Valley's Samantha Wilkinson, 24.31 and Lifford's Joyce
McKittrick in 25.12.
The Mens V1category was won by Letterkenny's Humphrey
Murphy, 17.40 followed by City of Derry's Gary McGee, 17.54 and Letterkenny's Martin Gormley, 17.55. The V2 category
was won by Letterkenny's Joe English in 17.55, second was Jimmy Renfrew from Enniskillen, 18.21 and third City of Derry's
Peter Lilburn, 18.48. In the V3 category, City of Derry's Christy McMonagle led the way in 20.06, followed by Lifford
AC's Danny Burns, 24.31. The Junior Mens race was won by Finn Valley's Orin McDermott, 19.33, followed by Lifford AC
pair Darren Gillespie, 20.34 and Ciaran Meehan, 20.55.
In the Womens V1 race, there was a one-two for
Lifford with Isabella Breslin coming home in 24.09, followed by Audrey Friel in 28.34 and Carla Hutton Crossan in 29.50.
In the V2 category, Dympna Barret led the way in 25.27 followed byh Rith McCrudden, 26.56 and Alice Devenney in 29.19.
In the V3 category, it was a Lifford one-two-three with Betty Burns first in 36.19, followed by Joan Colhoun, 36.48 and
Joan McHugh, 43.03. The Junior Womens race was won by Amy McDaid from City of Derry in 20.18 followed by Lifford AC's
Shannon Craig, 25.39 and Nicole Cuskelly in 25.40.
One of the big positives from today was the attendance
of nearly 70 Lifford athletes, numbers unheard of just twelve months ago. Another positive was the big local turnout
from St.Johnston and Carrigans which will hopefully be a kick start for many first time athletes from the area. A big
thank you to all who helped out today. A special word of thanks to Kildrum Tigers FC for providing their changing rooms
and parking, the local Gardai for their marshalling of the event, the parents from the Fit4Life group that made sandwiches,
and to Maurice Toland and the staff at the Fishermans Inn for the use of their premises after the race.
Next week, the race series moves to Raphoe with
a start time of 10am. Registration and changing at Deele College. With the big turnout this week, and all athletes
picking up points towards the finale in two weeks time, we can expect yet another big turnout next week.

New Year 3 Race 5K Series Launched
The club is delighted to announce the
launch of three 5K races which will take place in three different venues in January. An excellent way to start the New
Year and a challenge for walkers, joggers and race athletes alike. Following the recent success of the 5k races both
in Lifford and Raphoe in 2011, the club is delighted to bring road running into the heart of the local communities it serves.
A first race in St. Jonhston on the 15th, a visit to Raphoe on the 22nd, and the series finale in Lifford on
the 29th. Whether it is a New Year;s resolution, continuing race form, pre season training, or simply a Sunday morning
walk, the club extends its usual warm welcome to everyone who wishes to take part. Quality race routes, accurate timing,
race organisation and post race hospitality are guaranteed.
An added incentive to entrants is the allocation
of points across a number of different race categories at each race. Prizes will be given out at the culmination
of the series in Lifford on Sunday 29th January, so if you enter all three, maximise your chances of scoopoing these category
prizes at the end.

Lifford Fit4Life 5K
An early morning start for this group
of hardy runners, walkers and joggers, it saw the culmination of an 8 week Fit4Life programme at Lifford Athletic Club.
The programme, which had the invaluable support of the Donegal Local Development Company has made a significant impact on
the wider community during that time, with upwards on 80 taking part in the walk, jog, circuits, boxercise and zumba sessions.
The programme also delivered coaching to seven primary schools in Lifford, Raphoe and Carrigans, over €3,000 worth of
equipment for the schools, a Halloween camp, and some basic infrastructure to the club including a new web site which will
go live shortly.
Back to today, an impressive 66 runners and walkers
took to the start line, with the race run over a new route in the town for the first time. The race was won by Finn
Valley's Gerard Gallagher in 16.30, with first woman home Ailish Patton from Finn Valley in 22.18. The Lifford club
also had an impressive showing from its senior athletes including Daniel Hannigan, 17.47, James Crossan, 17.58, Martin Devenney,
19.27, Maurice Sharkey, 20.22, Joseph McGinley, 22.17, and Isabella Breslin in 25.05. A large turnout of our juvenile
athletes was also encouraging, with again some outstanding performances over the 5k distance.
In many ways, the race was all about the outstanding
leaps and bounds that the Fit4Life group have come on in such a short while, with some individuals taking up to 7 minutes
off their previous best. All who took part finished the distance and it was obvious behind the painful expressions at
the finish line, that there was an immense satisfaction and pride in completing a first competitive 5k. First home
in the Fit4Life group was Stanislaw Twardzik, 21.43, followed by Michael Roulstone, 23.19 and Patrick Gallagher, 23.35.
First lady home was Monica Rozum, 23.43 followed by sisters Helena Hynes, 27.26 and Tina Smith, 27.35.
Well done to everyone who took part today.
Thanks to everyone who travelled from other clubs, to the stewards, the Guards, those who made sandwiches and delivered refreshments
after the race. Finally, a big thank you to Kevin Connolly for co-ordinating this Fit4Life group over the past number
of weeks and who has committed to continuing the Fit4Life sessions, which will hopefully consolidate the existing group of
athletes, and provide a core group from which it will grow and expand.

Lifford AC Awards Night
The 2nd Annual Lifford AC Awards Night
will take place at the Fir Trees Hotel, Strabane on Sunday 27th November at 7pm. Last year's event, despite the ice
and snow was a tremendous success. The last year has been outstanding on many fronts and marks yet another significant
milestone on our road to growth, development and success. The night recognises each and every one of our members and
the important contribution they have made to the fabric of the club over the past year. It is one of the very few social
occasions that coaches, committee, parents and athletes can share away from the hard grind of training and the hustle and
bustle of competition. The night also preserves a valuable link to the club's past and the tremendous achievements of
past athletes, with a special Hall of Fame Award given on the night. The club history is a proud one, with our
existing crop of club athletes carrying on that proud tradition of involvement in and outstanding achievement at athletics
in this area.
We encourage all our members and parents to share
in the night's celebration on Sunday 27th November. Tickets are priced at only €5 each or €20 for a family
of four or more. A buffet will be served on the night. Tickets available in the clubhouse.

Fit 4 Life - 5K, Sunday 11th December 2011
Over the past few weeks, a large number
of people have been taking part in the free fitness sessions offered by the club, supported by the Donegal Local Development
Company. The response has been beyond our initial expectations, with nearly 60 individuals taking part either
on the track or at the classes. The programme will culminate in our Fit4Life 5k in the town on Sunday 11th December,
start time 10am. For many who started the programme a few short weeks back, a 5K was seen as a pipe dream, yet thanks
to all the instructors and the participants involved, these same people will be running that elusive 5K shortly. The
run is open not just to those involved in the programmes, but anyone who wishes to run either a competitive time or who simply
wants to keep the cobwebs off at this time of the year. We encourage as many as possible from the area to take part,
and hopefully make it the start of a programme of such runs in the coming weeks and months. On Line entry...

Lifford Gold and Silver at All Ireland Indoors
A fantastic weekend of athletic action saw two Lifford athletes bag gold
and silver national medals at the All Ireland Indoors in Magherafelt. Today, Lifford lad Conor McKinney struck gold
with a personal best equalling leap of 1.55m in the U15 high jump. This fantastic achievement followed on the success
yesterday of Conor Lynch who leapt to a new personal best of 1.30m in the U13 high jump. This jump secured a brilliant silver
medal for the young St. Johnston lad. Both medallists rounded off an excellent weekend of athletics for Lifford athletes.
Shannon Conwell, top 8 personal best throw of 6.31m in the U12 shot putt, while a leap of 1.10m was just short of her best
in the high jump. Shannon Craig equalled her personal best in the U13 high jump. In the boys U13 high, Brendan
O'Donnell was unable to replicate his best jump from two weeks ago, while in the U14 high jump Nicole Cuskelly just missed
out on a personal best jump in her event. Today, both Conor Lynch and Brandon Connolly ran personal bests in the U13 60m Hurdles.
Not much more that could be asked of these young athletes.

SCRAP
SATURDAY Metal Fundraising Collection
As part of our drive to raise
funds for the new tartan track, the club will be collecting scrap metal at the athletic grounds on Friday 25th,
Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th March. Anyone with scrap cars, engines, washing machines, tumble dryers, old machinery,
scrap steel, copper, brass, stainless steel, aluminium, scaffolding, scrap electric cables, lead, car and tractor batteries,
electric motors, old radiators, old steel barrels and old steel gates etc. is asked to bring this to the athletic club over
the course of that weekend. Contributors are asked not to bring fridges, televisions,
microwaves, timber or tyres, just scrap metal. If unable to transport the scrap
to the athletic club, collection is also available by phone or text Brendan on 086-6007847 or 087-9756426. Club members are asked to spread the word among family and friends with this a vital opportunity to raise
much needed funds for the club.

Ulster
Juvenile Indoor Championships, Magherafelt Sat 5th March
A total of 18 club athletes will travel to Magherafelt this weekend for the second stage of the Ulster Indoors
for U12 and U13 year olds. This follows on from a successful weekend at the Odyssey in Belfast just over a week ago for U14-U17 at which some excellent performances and two
bronze medals (Conor McKinney and Nicole Cuskelly) were recorded. We're confident that the recent hard work put
in by all our young athletes will pay didvidends again this weekend. Good luck to all these youngsters, many of them
competing at Ulster level for the first time.

Gallagher
wins Donegal team gold at All Ireland Cross Country Relays
Lifford athlete Karen Gallagher put in a brilliant team performance today at the All Ireland Inter County
Cross Country Relays to help Donegal to gold medals in the 4 x 500m race. In a race where Donegal athletes Natasha McArdle
and Leanne Kelly stretched the field and opened up a sizeable gap over the first two legs, Karen's third leg running was one
of composure and strength, extending the lead before handing the baton over to Rosses girl Sarah Doherty who led the team
home to All Ireland gold. A first All Ireland gold for the Killygordon girl who shows much promise for the future.
Well done to Karen and her Donegal team mates.

Sad
passing of Noel Gillespie
It was with great sadness that the club learned of the death of Noel Gillespie in recent days. Noel was a former
caretaker at the club for three years until he left in 2009. Noel’s enthusiasm for his work and for the personal
pride he took in the development of the club’s facilities saw Noel an integral part of the club for the three years
he was with us. His good humour, hard work, and a willingness to do whatever was asked of him saw Noel embraced as part of
the furniture both by his fellow workers, club officials and regular gym users alike. During his time with the club, Noel
was also enthusiastic about the completion of the tartan track and just prior to his sickness, had planned to help out with
club fundraising initiatives. The fact he cycled the several miles to and from work every day hail, rain or snow, saw a strength
which helped him fight his illness until his sad passing in recent days. To his wife and family we offer our deepest sympathies
and may he rest in peace.

hardy souls braved the elements and turned up for the final weigh in. Results, pictures, etc will be published by this
weekend. The club plans to start another Challenge before the end of the month so anyone interested should
think about gathering teams of 4 together.
